The author wasn't SS. He served in the regular German Army (the Wehrmacht). IIRC he served in the Russian campaign.

I don't know how anybody could reasonably discuss the history of this country, let alone the rest of the world, from past to present, without utilizing concepts like racism, war, and rape.
I can see how modern-day using has seen the overuse of said terms, sure, and people try to apply them to situations where the severity of such statements doesn't deserve it, but to dismiss them entirely?
It seems like an extreme that isn't warranted, that's all.
