We had to do practice swims with survival gear in Navy flight training. How you swim with a buoyancy assist is a different technique from a free swim, so it'd be worth doing laps with a PFD to experience it. We sidekicked, breast stroked, or back stroked. Been doing heavy bag workouts, 7 x (2+30 with 30 seconds rest). Then farmer walks around the gym with the single 88 LB KB, then 100 x 55 LB swings, and a bunch of calisthenics mixed in as a warmup to all of this.
