Mass changes of the Antarctic ice sheet impact sea-level rise as climate changes, but recent rates have been uncertain. Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data (2003–08) show mass gains from snow accumulation exceeded discharge losses by 82 ± 25 Gt a–1, reducing global sea-level rise by 0.23 mm a–1. European Remote-sensing Satellite (ERS) data (1992–2001) give a similar gain of 112 ± 61 Gt a–1. Gains of 136 Gt a–1 in East Antarctica (EA) and 72 Gt a–1 in four drainage systems (WA2) in West Antarctic (WA) exceed losses of 97 Gt a–1 from three coastal drainage systems (WA1) and 29 Gt a–1 from the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). EA dynamic thickening of 147 Gt a–1 is a continuing response to increased accumulation (>50%) since the early Holocene. Recent accumulation loss of 11 Gt a–1 in EA indicates thickening is not from contemporaneous snowfall increases. Similarly, the WA2 gain is mainly (60 Gt a–1) dynamic thickening. In WA1 and the AP, increased losses of 66 ± 16 Gt a–1 from increased dynamic thinning from accelerating glaciers are 50% offset by greater WA snowfall. The decadal increase in dynamic thinning in WA1 and the AP is approximately one-third of the long-term dynamic thickening in EA and WA2, which should buffer additional dynamic thinning for decades.

Holy coincidence! My wife and I were hiking last weekend and noticed this phenomena. We thought maybe we just happened upon some weird bumblebees

Last weekend I was in Mumbai and had couple of days to walk the city. In some areas there is one toilet per one thousand of residents, and the definition of fresh water is quite different from that of rich folks who occupy themselves with silly ideas about warm weather. When you realize that this is how the majority of the world population lives threads like this one suddenly seem utterly irrelevant. In that perspective the "problem" of global warming seems as important as the movement against cutting the tails of Riezenschnauzers. This does not mean, of course, that resources for studying bumblebee metrics should be redirected elsewhere.

this thread is certainly not as important as one about hypertrophy

and as for climate change and drinking water, in low-lying neighboring bangladesh, rising sea levels are already increasing salinity of drinking water for millions.

but hey, no big deal.

Hey DMW. What's your take on Marco Rubio's claim that climate has always been changing and always will be?

sure, to some extent.

but not to the extent we are seeing because of the greenhouse effect, which has been is scientifically demonstrated.

because of your use of mannetech, you will be around when the seriously bad shit starts to happen.

Maybe I will be but you won't. You planning to move to Bangaladesh? Better hurry before the ocean floods the country again. I heard that it does that a lot there historically.

It has been.. is... (are you drooling?) demonstrated as much as that the Sun revolves around the Earth.

A World Bank report released Sunday warned that if countries fail to sustain policies to reduce the rise of global warming, an additional 100 million people could be driven into poverty by 2030. The report argues that addressing climate charge will be essential to ending global poverty as poor people are hit the hardest by crop failures, extreme weather, spikes in food prices, and waterborne diseases.

Briefly skimmed the report. It's worth a quick read, because it makes a lot of good points. Poor people do tend to live in floodplains, and agricultural production is critical to their income. However, they also make a lot of curious assumptions-- assuming that the new dams and flood control measures in Central Asia won't work, especially since the World Bank funded a lot of them, is kind of laughable.

This is a major problem.....COULD is designed to scare us into forfeiting freedoms in many areas. Fuck COULD.

Bankers as academics, climate "science" at its best. Never mind that ninety percent of economic predictions turn out to be wrong, but nobody is really trying to predict. They just saying it could.

The game is pretty clever: the policies are unlikely to be introduced and the prediction will come true, and there will be millions more of poor. Not because of the weather of course, they will be fucked the traditional way. But the spiel "don't complain we didn't warn you" will be as strong as ever.

Where are the equations? A system of equations will also do. How much CO2 for how much temperature rise?

Where are the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry for this urgently needed research? Most of the world's scientists agree that we need to limit CO2 but nobody wants to recognize the world class researchers who did this work? Not even a nomination? Google "Climate Scientist Nobel Nomination".

You get mentions of Al Gore. Be happy to see otherwise.

Good news DMW!! Google the construction of Palm Island in Dubai. Those dudes know now how to create new land masses in the ocean. Use your imagination and you won't have to lose anymore sleep over the myth of global warming.
BTW. List the different greenhouse gasses besides CO2 and O2. Both needed to sustain life.

water vapor.

enjoy dubai in your golden years.

by the way, you children seem to fail to understand the distinction between the greenhouse effect, which is well documented, and global warming, which is an alteration in the climate resulting from additional co2, which is amplifying the natural greenhouse effect.

during the digestive processes of man and animals, methane is produced and when farting is dangerous. Stop all the farting by the zillions of muslims and the eating of meat by Christians and Jews and problem solved. Veganism is the salvation of the planet.
