Pain is constant during hard effort. Bontrager wrote, “It always hurts when you go as hard as you can.” And this is precisely what keeps most people from pulling out all the stops – it fucking hurts. But with the right attitude and the will to suffer, “this sort of pain can become easier to endure with practice.” You confront it, immerse yourself in it, and become it. You survive. The next time – because you know what's coming – you are less apprehensive, which spares energy, allowing you to focus, to push harder, and perhaps to truly suffer. You don't quit. You get through it. Confidence soars. Your self-image changes, you begin to see yourself as able, capable, and newfound capacity causes ambition to evolve so you try something harder. It lasts longer. In it, you have the time to think, to look inward, which separates the “sprint” experience from the endurance effort: self-knowledge gained during effort is more honest and clear than what one learns through analysis after the fact, which is too often corrupted by selective memory.
Bontrager also states, “the perspective that you acquire on facing hardship makes you stronger and tougher in a lot of ways that are unrelated” to the specific sport or endeavor, though only “if you get the full dose.” When dose and duration are great enough you will be transformed. How much, and how long? Olympic gold-medalist Brad Lewis wrote, “A man goes through many changes in 2000 meters. Some of them not very pretty. Some make you hate yourself.” Brad's incredible intensity allowed him to plumb his soul in less than seven minutes. Others substitute duration for intensity, spending hours or days on honest self-inquiry. Some dedicate themselves to a lifelong process. For those interested in finding answers, the journey lasts as long as is needed, constantly attended by the risk that the answer may not be the one desired.
Don’t believe everything you think.

Interesting...
A couple thoughts. First contextual. Bontrager is a cyclist. Cycling, like Xcountry skiing or rowing is a bit of an aberration in sport. Truly, one of the key skills is the abilty to "suffer". I don't mean suffer like a firefight and then carry your dead buddy through a swamp suffering, I mean this artificial state of suffering where you can go at 9/10ths effort for an hour plus feeling certain that you're going to die. It's artificial because if you were on foot, or swimming even you would simply collapse, fall over or drown...because you're on a bike and the work required to stay upright is so minimal, you can push your CV system past the point of rational, and..you can get up and do it again the next day. Rowing is the same way, so is X Country Skiing. Yeah it's super hard while your'e doing it, but it doesn't leave much of a dent...
Does this mean you're really hardcore and suffering through the pain? No..dude. you're riding a bike.....
So as an extension of the ole saw..that which does not kill you.....it's cute but not terribly helpful.
Further..
hardcore is ghey...how about Smartcore? working at great effort towards a purpose. stickign with the program when it sucks or is boring Just becuase it hurts doesn't mean you're a bad ass. Badasses in this country are raising a families on living wage jobs; doing their fourth tour in the asshole of the earth; doing swing shift work in county hospitals. Riding a bike is not bad ass. I raced at decent amatuer elite levels and was a bike messenger in a shitty rainy city before that...I may have felt hardcore but I was confused.

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Do you mean "Ben Benson from Atlanta Georgia"?Rant wrote:Oh brother! Fucking douche-fit. Can anyone identify this modern primative cunt?
It's in the Cindy Lauper lyrics Comin' to Jesus video aka GSX L1 Cert Day 1 Introductions.
"Anonymous. Because none of us are as cruel as all of us."

The chicky with the PVC and the new digi-camo shirt has one of those classic Southern Honeychile faces. Alas, they usually come packaged with a bigger rack.

For instance, there is a general consensus that Couch is a drunk fat ass who needs claw hammer therapy.

I've never been one to just overtly start trouble with someone but I would have to at least ask tat/ear disk guy what the fuck he's thinking with all that shit.
