It's just a blatant appeal to emotions. One of the time-tested tricks in the bag for any good carnie/huckster.
Yes, but it is very "real" to the kool-aid drinkers. Remember this isn't just a community; it's a cult. When one goes down, they all feel it.

A couple years ago, there were 100 affiliates, and the heroes were SF/SEALs who were KIA. The community was small, so I can kinda get it (even though it felt like cheap marketing). Now there are 1100 affiliates, and there is a new named workout for every uniformed person that dies in the line of duty. Given the growing community and the fact that some of these workouts are getting silly, it kinda cheapens what these guys did.

**RE: odin's post. Couch's tactic is the same as any hardliner, "anyone who isn't with us is a bleeding heart commie pinko." Way to build community.

It's probably time to repost this cult checklist.
The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law.

‪ Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished.

‪ Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, and debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group and its leader(s).

‪ The leadership dictates, sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act, and feel (for example, members must get permission to date, change jobs, marry—or leaders prescribe what types of clothes to wear, where to live, whether or not to have children, how to discipline children, and so forth).

‪ The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader(s) and members (for example, the leader is considered the Messiah, a special being, an avatar—or the group and/or the leader is on a special mission to save humanity).

‪ The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society.

‪ The leader is not accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations).

‪ The group teaches or implies that its supposedly exalted ends justify whatever means it deems necessary. This may result in members' participating in behaviors or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical before joining the group (for example, lying to family or friends, or collecting money for bogus charities).

‪ The leadership induces feelings of shame and/or guilt iin order to influence and/or control members. Often, this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion.

‪ Subservience to the leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and friends, and radically alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the group.

‪ The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members.

‪ The group is preoccupied with making money.

‪ Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities.

‪ Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members.

‪ The most loyal members (the “true believers”) feel there can be no life outside the context of the group. They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves or others if they leave (or even consider leaving) the group.

Definitely - and then you get comments like; "been a tough few days, makes me proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with my brothers in Iraq. Well, I say 'shoulders', I'm obviously a bank manager in New York, but I'm there in spirit, and I watch the news every night. Gotcha backs bro's! Get some! Go again! YEAAAAAAH!"

Yeah, I have been mindful of my vocabulary the past few years. It's pretty common in pop-physical culture to talk about "warriors" and "suffering" through workouts (sorry, Twight), blah blah blah. Unless you're participating in an event where coming in second involves losing limbs or dying, let's reserve those words for the folks who go through the real shit.

I agree. The wannabe badasses today all think they're warriors for doing everyday shit that folks in the past just did as part of their routine and moved on. I get tired of listening to football players talking about "going to war" and all that bullshit, or the mulletheads and guidos at the gym who think they're "warriors" because they do 11 reps when their previous max was 10. The old-timers did this shit in between milking cows and bringing in the harvest. It wasn't any more intense in their minds than brushing their teeth. Now all these clowns today have lost the sense of what it takes to be a man since they're all pussified and fucked in the head by modern society so they glorify everyday mundane shit like training as if it were war.

The current guy they are “honoring” was a cop not a solider. Of course it sucks and of course you can empathize with the families and all but this stuff is just schmaltzy. If an iron worker that did @fit falls of a beam and bites the dust does he get honored?

I’m sure dozens will take this the wrong way but I find this false grief over soliders, cops and fire fighters to be polarizing and sensational. It’s just mock sentiment. People die all the time. I see kids where I work that are very ill with incurable diseases that had nothing to do with any choice they made and no one seems to make a big fuss about it. To me that it is tragic. I have 2 family members that died in service in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was sad because I knew them. But I never banter around nebulous terms about supporting the troops or honoring heroes or whatever. I don’t even know what that means. It’s just propaganda. And it always seems to be the ones that have never served in any capacity or had even put their balls on the line about anything that are the most jingoistic about the whole business. I mean what has Couch ever done besides fall off the monkey bars during one of his black outs?

The whole WOD-naming thing is about basking in reflected glory, and trying to create legitimacy by piggybacking on someone else's coat-tails.

I met a douche-fitter once that was explaining @fit to me not knowing that I did it in its infancy. He kept harping on about how Navy SEALs were into it. He wasn’t a SEAL, never served and never competed in any sport at any level. He was a wannabe but lacked the stones to put his ass on the line in any physical endeavor. Posturing as a bad ass was enough for him. This is the quintessential @fitter. The military guys are the saving grace of Couch. With out them he would have nothing but he-shes and pussies to point to as examples of what @fitting is all about. @fitters are like what we used to call heavy bag heroes when I fought. They could wallop the bag, run the speed bag, skip rope like mother fuckers and out box their image in a mirror any time. Just don’t ask them to lace up and step in the ring. These guys did it so they could brag to chicks and other douche bags that they were “fighters”. I swear a few of them would go home and hit themselves in the face I order to get bruises and cuts. They sure weren’t getting them from the ring. I would also venture to say that the majority of IGX “martial artists” fit this bill as well. I can envision Fatty screaming and posturing a lot at his community college karate club.

You're not the first. This topic has been discussed on another forum too.

It reeks of phoniness by the fact that only a sliver of @fitters even knew the guy or had even heard of him prior to his @fit obit followed by a workout naming ceremony. In Boston the Irish politicians has always had a custom of hitting each and every wake in their wards. I have always despised it because it’s grandstanding. There are doing this for votes and it’s very effective. The bereaved will think, “Wow what a great guy councilman O’Hearn is for coming to my mother’s wake.” He will then have that family's vote for life. Glassman is a real fucking creep in my book.

Dunno if that fat faggot has seen a day of exercise in his life either. We all keep hearing stories but the only thing I see him doing exercise wise besides talking with 50 letter words is lifting his Tanqueray bottle and toasting the bank manager.
